Holland] Enumerators used booklets with sheets A-B, repeating. Each sheet was numbered consecutively by the enumerators ie. 1A 1B, 2A, 2B, etc. In 1900 Appomattox was enumerated by Magisterial Districts (3) and enumeration Districts (6). Each page is filled in to indicate sheet #, Supervisor's District #, enumeration District #, Magisterial District, name of the enumerator and date of enumeration. Over the first line of each family unit there is written some kind of coding or tally such as 4-1/pf -4, which in many cases makes it almost impossible to read the given name or initial. ========================= Clover Hill, District 15 ========================= North of Appomattox River and East of road by Hixburg to Prince Edward County line. Sheets 1A through 15B, Stamped 203B-218A, 1 June - 23 June 1900, Dwelling 1-248, Family 1-260, by Reubin P. Bryant. Sheet 15B, (218A) is noted as end of district. ========================= Clover Hill, District 16 ========================= South of Appomattox River and West of road by Hixburg to Prince Edward County line. Sheets 1A through 20B, stamped 218B -238A, 1 June - 7 July 1900, Dwelling 1 - 365, family 1-367 by Herbert S. Gilliam. The village of Pamplin is listed on sheets 1A-3A and even though listed at the beginning of the district it is clear from the dates on the sheets that the village was enumerated after the rest of the district. After completing the district the enumerator started the Pamplin Village with a new set of dwelling and family numbers as well as farm numbers. The dwelling and family numbers (but not the farm numbers) for the district were later changed to run in continuous sequence from the last Pamplin numbers. Sheet 3A, page 220B,is noted as the end of Pamplin; Sheet 3B, page 221A, is blank. Sheet 20B, 238A, is noted as the end of the district. Many images are very light and difficult to read. Capital Ls and Ss are so identical that is almost impossible to differentiate when used as an initial. ======================= Southside, District 17 ======================= West of line commencing at Stonewall District line on road south of Oakville, along road by F.W. McKinney's and by Court House, crossing railroad at depot, and on the Redhouse road to mountain road (at schoolhouse) and with latter road by Hunter's old place to Falling river and down same to Spring Mills. Sheets 1A through 15B, stamped 238B - 253A, 1 June - 20 June 1900, Dwelling and family nos. 1 - 261, by Robert C. Mann. Mr. Mann used some very original spelling for some of the names recorded. There is no notation on sheet 15B (253A) as being the end of the district, however it probably is since the next district starts with stamped page 253B. ======================= Southside, District 18 ======================= East of line commencing at Stonewall District line on road south of Oakville, along road by F. W. McKinney's and by Court House, crossing railroad at depot, and on the Red House road to mountain road (at schoolhouse) and with latter road by Hunter's old place to Falling River and down same to Spring Mills. Sheets 1A through 13B, Pages 253B - 266A, 1 June - 29 June 1900, Dwelling and family nos. 1 - 227, by James L. Driskill. Mr. Driskill's spelling is out of this world. It is almost impossible to tell the difference in capital Ns & Rs and the names Willie and Willis. There is no notation on sheet 13B (266A) as being the end of the district, however it probable since the next district begins with 266B ======================= Stonewall, District 19 ======================= North and East of a line commencing at the road on line of Southside District, south of Oakville, thence with road by Oakville to Bent Creek on the James River. Sheets 1A through 11B, Pages 266A -277A, only sheets 1A and 11A are dated, 1 June 1900 and 25 June 1900, Dwelling 1-183, Family 1 - 191 by David A. Christian, Jr. Sheet 11A ends on line 16 and 11B is completely blank. There is no notation of completion on sheet 11A or 11B ( 276B or 277A) that it is the last page of the district, however page 277B is the beginning of ED 20. ======================= Stonewall District, 20 ======================= South and West of a line commencing at the road on line of Southside District, south of Oakville, thence with road by Oakville to Bent Creek on the James River. Sheets 1A through 26A, Pages 277B - 302B, 1 June - 3 July 1900. Dwelling 1 -435, Family 1 - 455 by Frank W. McKinney. There is no certificate of completion on page 26A, 302B but 26B is completely blank.
