Notes concerning the transcription of the 1870 census for Upper and Lower Turkeyfoot Townships, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. This transcription was made prior to the commencement of the Rootsweb Census project and thus does not necessarily follow all the guidelines. This transcription was originally done for posting on the web site for these townships and for integration into the associated township family tree. In the process of integrating the 1870, 1860, and 1850 censuses and family trees contributed by various people, some of the surnames in the census were corrected as determined by these several sources. I've indicated with a star, following the name, where the name does not appear as originally transcribed. I believe this is an improvement since the 1870 census was particularly difficult to read due to the very light copy and the enumerator's frequent lapse into poor legibility. One last thing, 1870 experienced a growth in the area due to the coming of the railroad causing an attending growth in hotels and boarding houses. The poor legibility of names of the boarders and the likelyhood that they were transients, led me to not record all their names. In those instances, I've indicated only the number of boarders. You will also find that I never transcribed line numbers nor Dwelling number. It is my recollection that the dwelling number was the same as the entry number. This makes sense since this was a rural area and dwelling numbers were likely non-existent.
