There is no heading on the page. The page ends with the following certification: "Salem August 14th, 1803 This is a True and a just Return of the Number of the white male inhabetens Levi Chapman jun, Lister." Mr. Chapman used a bold stroke and wrote small letters, so many of the letters are difficult to discern. In addition, he left his "a"s open, so they often look like "u"s or even "c"s; his "e"s often look like "c"s; he sometimes forgot to cross his "t"s; and he sometimes dropped or reversed letters. Despite this, looking at the names as a whole, knowledge of the 1800 census names, and being able to zoom in on the names allowed for deciphering most, if not all of the names on the list.
