Kearney County, NE 1870 Federal Census This Census was transcribed by Mark Byars and proofread by Nichole Byars for the USGenWeb Census Project http://www.usgenweb.org/census. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TRANSCRIBER's NOTES: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The enumerator, M. B. Lamphere, made several curious entries in recording this county. Please note the following: the family number six (6) is repeated twice; some dwelling numbers have no family numbers or people recorded (presumably because no one was home); some dwellings have no family numbers but do have people recorded for the dwelling (these are presumably businesses). The most confusing element of this census enumeration is the manner in which the soldiers at Ft. Kearney were recorded. The men working at the fort either lived in or claimed residence in counties other than Kearney county, but were included in this census. Mr. Lamphere made notations in the left-hand margin of census page 100b noting which county each man was from. All men lived in Kearney county except for the men on the following page and lines: Franklin Co., pg. 100b, lns 17-24; Monroe Co., 100b lns 3-16; Cheyenne Co., 100b, 30-39. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
