In 1860 the State of Montana was broken into 2 parts, the land east of the Rockies Continental Divide was know as Nebraska Territories, while land to the west was known as Washington Territories. Gold had been found in the late 1850's in and around Virginia City and later in Last Chance Gulch near Helena. The Area was renamed the Montana Territories in the early 1860's and divided into counties. In 1870 the first census year the County of Big Horn only had a few miners and ranchers along with a Indian Agent on the Yellowstone River for the Crow Indians. The nearby Sioux Indians in the southern part of the county and into Wyoming Territories were very hostile to White men as several treaties with them had been broken when gold was found in and around the Black Hills.
