Vance. Mr. Vance was the first to transcribe and published the Dade County 1840 census in 1969. And, we all thank him. I considered it a honor when my friend agreed to proof this transcription. We have read, re-read and proofed the following transcription trying to be as accurate as humanly possible. When Mr. Vance originally published the 1840 census, one of his comments was "Ages, information pertaining to literacy, etc. are copied here as near as possible as in the original census. This does not mean the census takers, Mr. Hendrix (1840) Mr. Pace (1850) were accurate. We know from the many subsequent corrections on the records that Mr. Hendrix couldn't add." I found this to be very true and therefore, as you read what has been transcribed here, please note that the information pertaining to numbers that appear in brackets are our corrections. Dade County is one of the smaller counties in the state of Georgia. The topography is that of mountains and ridges with a narrow valley running the entire length of the county from the Tennessee line to the Alabama line. By living here and knowing the county, I can see in my mind a lone man riding horseback traveling back and forth across these mountains, ridges and valley, trying to locate and record the people who were moving into the county almost weekly. It had to be a very hard, harsh and difficult ride for him to make day in and day out until his task was completed. Therefore, one cannot be judgmental of his efforts. If anyone has any corrections or questions, please let us know. We will gladly recheck the records and make whatever corrections that may be needed.
