Jared Tod Workman, 15, of Weston, passed his final requirement for the honored rank of Eagle Scout this week. Workman's Court of Honor and presentation of rank will be from 7:30-8:30 pm, Saturday, November 24 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 851 N. Hiatus, Plantation.

Jared spearheaded a 300+ hour project transcribing/digitizing the first census of Broward County, year 1920, for free, unlimited access on the web and at local family history centers. Over 50 people within church and community assisted during an all day event on May 15th, of last year, then continued on to completion with their home computers. The project was made available on June 8th of this year, complements of The USGenweb Census Project, The Florida USGenWeb Archives and RootsWeb, in cooperation with the Family History Center in Plantation. • ED 10: Fort Lauderdale city including jail
• ED 11: Precinct 5, Hallandale and Precinct 6, Davie; Each precinct should be shown separately on schedules
• ED 199: Seminole Indians in Broward County

This valuable work aides family historians in finding crucial information about families living in this area in 1920. Among the resources found in this record include: names of each family member, place and year of birth, place of birth/country of origin of both parents, occupation, education and more. According to Earnie Breeding, National Coordinator of recruitment and training for The USGenWeb Census Project, Jared's project is the first time that a major metropolitan area has been done as a single project for USGenWeb. Breeding continues on to say that the project would be expected to require at least 6 volunteers each working at least 3 months at the rate of 3-5 hours per week. I am Earnie Breeding. I am National Coordinator of recruitment and training for the USGenWeb Census Project. I am also an ex-scouter with 25 years service to the Boy Scouts of America.

I would like to suggest that you Emphasise the uniqeness of this Eagle project. Jared's project is the first time that a major metropolitan area has been done as a single project for our project. This work would be expected to require at least six volunteers each working at least three months at a rate of 3-5 hours per week. Thus Jared has coordinated for us the equivalent of 3 man years of volunteer work.

His work will be used by the genealogical community for the foreseeable future.

As a former asst Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Neighborhood commissioner and Eagle Board of Review member, I would like to add my personal congratulations to this outstanding young man. We need many more like him.
