When the census was photographed for microfilming, the photographer allowed an instrument to cast a shadow over the names on some pages, rendering those names unreadable. 2. During the photography for microfilming, the photographer did not (or could not) expose the entire facing page in some instances, rendering the left-most column of the slave schedule (males slaves less than 10 years old) unreadable. Ms. Katherine L. Vollen of the National Archives in Washington, D. C. helped me solve the shadow problem, by going to the original document and recording the shadow-obscured names. But, since it would have involved a much more extensive review of the original document, I made no attempt to find the entries in the missing slave schedule. Joseph F. (Joe) Stegall
